DESCRIPTION:American Gothic 5k\n\nSaturday\, June 7th\, 2025\, rain date of June 8th\n Race 8:00 AM- 10:00 AM\nPreregister by May 22nd at 4:00 PM to receive shirt at the event\nWalk-ins welcome\nCost $25 per participant\nOnline registration at mycountyparks.com or in person\n\n     Registration begins at 7:15 AM in front of the American Gothic House Center. All ages are welcome but minors under the age of 16 must be supervised by an adult aged 18 or older. Route goes through Eldon\, along the Des Moines River\, through the park\, and will end at the American Gothic House Center. \nEntry fee of $25 includes map\, medals for 1st\, 2 and\, and 3rd places per age group\, and shirt. To guarantee shirt size and to be able to pick it up at the event\, participants must preregister and all fees paid on or before May 22nd at 4:00 PM. Checks can be mailed but must be received at the Center by May 22nd \nLate registrations and walk-ins are accepted but shirts will be ordered at the event to be picked up at a later date. Credit cards will be accepted through June 5th at the mycountyparks website otherwise bring a check or exact cash amount. \nWatch our Facebook page in the event of inclement weather. Rain date is set for June 8th \nPlease note that a family can now all be on one form.\nNo refunds once payment is made unless BOTH the 7th and the 8th are canceled by the American Gothic House Center.

The American Gothic House Center invites students and members of the public to participate in our annual art contest. Kick-off for art submissions will begin April 23rd and entries will be accepted until 4:00 PM on May 23rd. Judging by a panel will determine 1st and 2nd places in the following categories: K-2nd\, 3-5th\, 6-8th\, 9-12th\, and Adult. All submissions will be on display in the American Gothic House Center during our regular operating hours. Public voting for Best in Show will be in-person only beginning June 4th though June 8th. Cash prizes to winners.\nLimit of 2 art pieces per person. Contest submission form can be found at either of our websites\, Facebook event\, or at the Center. This contest is sponsored in part by the Ottumwa Area Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Self-guided Hikes and Passport\n\nPlants May 24th – June 6th\nFrogs & Toads June 7th – June 20th\nBees & Wasps June 21st – July 4th\nBats July 5th – July 18th\nMoths & Butterflies July 19th – August 1st\nFarm Animals Aug 2nd – Aug 15th\nSpiders Aug 16th – Sept 2nd (longer due to holiday)\n\nThese FREE self-guided hikes will begin at the trees by the picnic tables north of the American Gothic House Center and are available from dawn to dusk. A new one will be posted every two weeks\, May 23rd through September 2nd. They are open to the public. Since the Center is managed by the Wapello County Conservation Department\, these hikes are wildlife or conservation-oriented. Download a hike “passport” for kids ages 6-18 from either of our websites\, Facebook event\, or stop into the Center and pick one up. Journal 3 things you learned from 3 different 2025 hikes at the American Gothic House plus complete 2 independent activities May- August 2025 to earn an American Gothic House Center lanyard! All details and requirements for this activity are on the passport.\nAlso ask to check out an educational backpack from the Center’s gift shop May 23rd through September 2nd to help with the journey! Topics are bugs\, birds\, and plants.
